Roving speed cameras to hit state freeways, highways
Associated Press
Nov. 15, 2007 12:05 PM

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says it's ready to begin using its photo enforcement vehicles along the state's highways and freeways.

DPS says the new roadside vans will make Arizona the first to have a state-level program using electronic speed enforcement.

DPS Director Roger Vanderpool says the vans aren't intended to replace law enforcement officers, but are simply a tool to increase public safety. He says many crashes are caused by speeders and the technology should cut down on those accidents.

DPS will use the vans on highways where a high number of crashes are caused by speeders. It won't say exactly where they will be deployed.

They are run by Redflex Traffic Systems of Scottsdale, which is being paid about $95,000 a year for two vans under a contract awarded in August.

The first location for one of the cameras will be on Arizona 347, also known as Maricopa Road, in the area between the east Valley and Casa Grande.

Well f^&*...I was flashed by a roving DPS van last night coming home. He was underneath the Pinnacle Peak Bridge on I-17 on the OTHER SIDE of the concrete barriers. AND it was just entering a construction zone....DOH! I was trying to get into the lane to get off the freeway and no one would let me in. I saw a flash 2 miles back but didnt know what it was. Then out of nowhere.....POOOOOOF! I was blinded. Can't wait to see how much this one is going to run..... :x

Yeah I saw him there too... luckily, I was travelling SB on I-17! Did you notice that there weren't ANY signs on the side of the road letting you know that there was photo radar up ahead?!?!?!?!? I thought that was mandatory?

Yeah...I thought so too... :x Even in Europe they tell you that there is a camera ahead. You just dont know where. There was one hidden in the bushes right past the on ramp near my house. That one was so hard to find! I was told that the van is only taking pics of peoples faces cause there is no second flash...but that doesnt make sense....

I believe they always send out warning tickets during the first 30 days of a new photo radar program....

It just occurred to me that if everyone drove will full-face motorcycle helmets, not only would there be less injury in an accident, but these photo radar cameras would be rendered completely useless.

pd does not have to post signs declaring the cameras are in use. they do it for the cars nor the stationary ones in north scottsdale...
