Almost bought a Clubman S.....almost

Postby bigcoyote » Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:13 am

Hey all,

Well after being MINIless for a while and looking high and low for a Clubman S, I did the unthinkable..... bought a non-MINI car.

I couldn't help myself. I know I will need therapy eventually and a good support group, but I just couldn't help myself......

I passed on the Clubman S, the Lotus Elise, BMW Z4M - all are great cars and Juli test drove them all with me...( you all should have seen Her & I in the Elise....I wish I had a picture ).

But I fell in love with this:

2008 Brazen Orange Metallic - Solstice GXP

I can't wait to get it broken in - maybe I'll run into you all on a run sometime and we can see if I made the right choice

Past - 04 MCS - Whalen 8 ball, Dinan CAI, 15% pully, Unichip, B&B
Present - 11 Clubman - Short Shift, Whalen, Silencer Mod

It's funny... the my MINI was supposed to be governd at 14? -- and I know lots of us had our MINI's well over that... with no issues.

The GTO was supposed to be governd at 161 - but again, I have taken the car well above that speed with no issues.

The Solstice is not supposed to have a governer - it is supposed to be "drag" limited to 142, but that is stock. We all know how long cars remain "stock" around me

Edit---- I found out it does have a limiter, it is supposed to cut out at 155. Although several people on the solstice forums say they have seen 160 with out a problem.... could be speedo error.

I quess my mission is to find out once I get it broken in ...

was only wondering cause I had a GTO that couldnt keep up with me over 120.. When he cought up to me a few miles down the road at a stop light, he asked what size motor I had.. I just said.. Oh, its just some little 4cylinder..

Whoever was driving the GTO must have chickened out - or had a horrible car. Mine was 95% stock and it came alive at high rpm's -- it would pull like a frieght train from 90 to 160 - then kinda level off to a slow pull up to 175ish...

Granted... I never raced a MINI in my GTO - but the GTO felt alot faster than my S over 100mph - and I know my S would top out before the GTO would.

But from stop light to stop light - it would be close. GTO's are heavy and have skinny tires ( for a big car ). I also know a stock GTO will not out handle a stock MINI - The MINI has the edge on a curvy road.

The GTO has torque and very good brakes - thats about it

The 2004/05 GTO was electronically governed with a 155MPH top speed, no such limiter on the 2006, so makes sense its high end would be a bit happier :)
