Dee my research has let me to two posible answers.
1. uninstall Google toolbar if installed.
2. disable "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery" in the Security section of preferences

Both have been known to cause lockups on the MAC OS.

Why install Firefox on a MAC when Safari works?
