Does anyone have any ideas or comments on purchasing a radar detector? I didn't have much use for one until I bought my 06 JCW Mini.

I tried to search previous threads on this because I know we have discussed this before. Didn't have much luck...But there were several opinions.

Anyway, I have a Valentine V1 and couldn't be happier. I love the counter and the direction arrows that tell how many and where the sources it detects are.

I've had Escorts mostly, all great.

The newest one lets you download fixed photoradar locations and can mark false alarm locations so they won't bother you again.

They also make a battery powered one that makes it easy to move from car to car, or for traveling.

For Metro Phx, with all of the photo enforcement being added that is not radar detectable, the Escort 9500 with GPS Tagging/Marking is pretty popular these days, as Todd mentioned. Basically once you mark those areas it reminds you to slow down. Frankly sticking closer to the speed limit is just easier... hehe... amazing how that works. All the Photo Enforcement setups so far give you 9mph over the posted limit, and because of the downward angle of the radar guns in the new mobile van units, even the newest detectors don't give you much, if any, advance warning.

I believe Valentine is working on adding that GPS capability, but I don't believe the current v1 has it yet.

I got a Passport 8500 X50 for Christmas! On our first trip up to Montezuma's Castle through Prescott, I got stopped for speeding! The state cop said I was doing 68 in an area where the speed limit had just dropped from 65 to 55. At the time I saw him my GPS said I was going 62. Get this: He said he caught me on radar, yet my Passport never said boo! The bottom line: no matter what, you are at the mercy of the police regardless of the technology you have.
